Vosges is the most southerly department in the Lorraine area of Northeast France. It borders the Alsace wine region on its eastern side and is home to the highest peaks in the Vosges mountain range, where skiing can be enjoyed during the winter months. If you're looking for inexpensive rural French property in an untamed wilderness, Vosges could deliver exactly what you're after.
The Vosges mountains rise up to more than 1400m above sea level in the south-east of the department and are mostly covered in dense pine forest. Parts of the mountain range are comprised of pink sandstone, from where the material for the 'Belfort Lion' was obtained. The lion sculpture can be seen today outside the castle in Belfort. On the southern end of the mountain range is the Ballons des Vosges Natural Park. It is here, bordering Belfort, where some of the most spectacular Vosges scenery can be found.
Vosges property is not expensive - a 4-bed villa in France near Remiremont, just to the south of Epinal, costing less than 150,000 euros. Slightly more costly is Vosges property close to the main skiing area of La Bresse. Here, a 4-bed chalet style French property can be purchased for between 200,000 euros and 250,000 euros.
