The Var is the most southerly department in the Provence. It takes in the dramatic rocky coastline between Cannes in the east and La Ciotat near Marseille in the west. The department also extends inland covering the bulk of 'traditional' Provence countryside as far north as the foothills of the Alpes de Provence. The Var is seen as a gateway to the Cote d'Azur and the Provence Alps, making the department a much visited area, and a much sought-after region by French property buyers looking for that idyllic villa in France on the Cote d'Azur.
The Var countryside is a dramatic riot of colour. Pine forests adorn the plains and hillsides, while in the valleys are orchards and vineyards producing a fine array of local produce and of course the famous Provence wines. Honey production is extensive throughout the Var, the department having some27,000 registered hives. There are also acres and acres of olive groves, as well as fields of lavender and thyme. Dotted around the beautiful Provence countryside are medieval villages clinging to rock faces, as well as typical agricultural villages and hamlets. Along the winding roads, you'll find many isolated farmhouses too, that stand over fields lined with poplar trees.
Moving down to the coast, the Var landscape changes dramatically to breathtaking seascapes. This is the Cote d'Azur where grand French property line the hillsides above the rocky Mediterranean coastline. Var property around St Tropez Bay and across to Frejus, St Raphael and Agay are particularly in demand. Here, Var property buyers will find luxury villas, prestige mansions and other exclusive properties with some exceptional views across the Mediterranean.
