A short distance away from the Pyrenees Atlantiques and the city of Pau is the city of Tarbes. It stands on the upper part of the Adour River that flows through Southern Landes and Dax then out to sea. The city has an international airport, which provides easy access for tourists and French property buyers wanting to explore Tarbes and the south-western part of the Midi-Pyrenees.
Tarbes is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains and is the capital of the department of Haute Pyrenees. It is a green and historic town packed full of parks and gardens, and offers some fine examples of renaissance-style architecture. Tarbes also has a reputation for breeding horses. In the centre of Tarbes is the internationally renowned Tarbes Stud Farm, which is set on a 100-year old 8-acre park. The town also provides excellent golfing facilities, as well as convenient passage to Lourdes and the Pyrenees National Park.
Tarbes property with unobstructed views of the mountains and surrounding countryside is the most sought-after type of French property in the town. A 3-bed Tarbes property on the edge of the town will cost around 170,000 euros. To the north of the town there are some fine country properties to be found. Prices are quite reasonable too - an 8-bed villa in France in the Adour Valley can be purchased for around 350,000 euros.
