St Malo is situated on the Northern Brittany coast at the mouth of the Rance estuary. Its strategic position on a headland jutting out into the sea, overlooking the town of Dinard, has bestowed a great seafaring tradition upon the town. St Malo was in fact once one Europe's most important trading ports, receiving vessels in from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Today, St Malo still has a strong maritime connection through its ferry port, which services no less than six destinations in the UK and the Channel Islands. With such easy access to and from the UK, St Malo has also become a popular location for foreign homebuyers in search of French property investments in this beautiful part of Brittany.
The most spectacular part of St Malo is the old walled town. Known as Intra-Muros, it stands upon a granite outcrop and is adjoined to the mainland via a causeway. The town was completely destroyed in World War II, but has been faithfully reconstructed ensuring its glory lives on for years to come. Stunning views of the Channel and the rugged coastline can be had from the ramparts here, and there are also limited opportunities to buy St Malo property in the old town too.
Moving eastwards from the old town, St Malo property overlooking the beaches are much sought-after by property buyers looking for an edge of town location. However, if you're looking for a rural villa in France with a sea-view then the dramatic coastline heading up towards Pointe du Grouin and also down to the small town of Cancale may yield some surprises. There are also some beautiful locations further up the Rance River towards the medieval town of Dinan where some exclusive French property can be found.
