On the west coast of France between the regions of Aquitaine and the Western Loire is one of the most idyllic and peaceful areas you are likely to find in France. Gently undulating hills, sleepy villages and a climate that is on a par with the South of France makes the Poitou Charente a top choice when it comes to buying French property...and the prices are quite reasonable too!
The Poitou Charente is made up of four departments. In the north bordering the Western Loire are Deux Sevres and Vienne, while in the south are the departments of the Charente and the Charente Maritime.
Deux Sevres is rather reminiscent of the rolling countryside in Southern England. Green fields dissected by hedgerows and occasional small villages and hamlets monopolise the landscape, while fields of sunflowers and fields of cattle are common sights too. Niort is the main town in the province. It is a pretty town offering excellent shopping facilities as well as a popular market. A 3-bed stone villa in France here will cost in the region of 180,000 euros to 200,000 euros. Across the central part of Deux Sevres runs a line of hills, some of which reach up as high as 700ft.
Further to the east is Vienne, so-named for the River Vienne that passes through its lands. Here Poitou Charente property hunters will find much to cheer about. The area is visually stunning and the property prices are some of the cheapest in the Poitou Charente region. French property along the Vienne River is very popular, as well as property close to the historic town Poitiers.
Moving south we find yet more French delights. Charente Maritime is the only department in the Poitou Charente region that borders the sea. Its unique geography includes the magnificent seaside town of La Rochelle in the north and Royan in the south, the latter of which is renowned for its beaches. Included within its boundaries are the idyllic islands of Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron, both of which are adjoined to the mainland by road bridges. Ile d'Oleron especially is a very attractive place in which to buy Poitou Charente property.
Inland to the east is the department of Charente. Famous for the production of Cognac brandy, the Charente is a French paradise. Among the fields of sunflowers beautiful villages and hamlets await discovery. Along the Charente Valley there are vineyards, while the network of rivers and walking trails offers an outdoor experience with nature that is second-to-none.
