Perpignan is situated in the Languedoc Roussillon close to the Spanish border. It is a historic town that offers sea, sand and sunshine in abundance. The town is less than a 10-minute drive away from the Mediterranean coastline, and is less than a half-hour drive from the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Perpignan's international airport, which operates direct routes to the UK and other North European countries, provides exceptional access to the town and its surrounding countryside. Low-cost direct flight deals to Perpignan from these countries have been one of the main reasons why the town has experienced an increase in demand for French property during recent years.
Perpignan's proximity to Spain is very evident around the town. There is a real Catalan influence from across the border, which is reflected in everything from arts and crafts to local cuisine. In fact, the town proudly flies the Catalan flag alongside that of France, and many choose to speak the Catalan language too.
Outside the town, the open countryside reveals field after field of vines. This area of the Languedoc does have a good reputation for winemaking, with some popular Languedoc-Roussillon labels emanating from the vineyards close by.
Perpignan property in the town itself is a mix of styles. Newly built Perpignan property with characteristic red roof tiles are widely available, as are whitewashed townhouses, some of which are in need of renovation. Further towards the coast, French property in the area includes luxury apartments along the seafront at Canet Plage. A 5-bed prestige villa in France on the edge of Perpignan will cost in the region of 350,000 euros to 400,000 euros.
