The beautiful city of Pau rests on a section of the upper Pau River that descends from the Central Pyrenees Mountains in the Pyrenees Atlantiques. It is a wealthy city that rose to prominence when Henri IV - France's first Protestant King - was born there. During the 19th century Pau became popular with the British when it was declared that the region's mild climate had therapeutic properties. Today, the British are joined by other North Europeans who come to Pau for its climate and to hunt for French property in the surrounding countryside.
Besides the warm climate, Pau is a town that has a great deal more to offer tourists and those looking to buy Pau property either as a vacation home or permanent residence. There is a wealth of spectacular architecture around the city as well as parks and gardens. The regal Castle's Park can be found in Pau, as well as palaces and chateaux. There is some breathtaking scenery too, and the city has blended well its modern conveniences with its historic past. As the tourist guide says, Pau is a "dream city".
There is a huge array of French property to be found in Pau and its surrounding area. In the city itself, anything from renaissance style Pau property to modern luxury apartments are available for sale. Larger and more prestigious homes can be found on the outskirts of the city, while in the foothills of the Pyrenees there are some exquisite rural properties offering exceptional views of the mountains. Prices are reasonable too - a 5-bed villa in France on the north side of Pau with tennis courts and pool was recently on the market for 390,000 euros.
