Nimes is the capital of Gard in the Languedoc Roussillon region. It is an ancient city with a history stretching back more than 2,000 years, and is well-known for its Roman monuments, the most impressive of them being a 1st century AD amphitheatre. Today, Nimes is an affluent town offering a wonderful climate and fine living in the south of France. These attributes make Nimes a much sought-after location for French property hunters looking for holiday homes in the sun.
As well as the influences of Rome, there is a distinct Mediterranean feel to Nimes also. Bordering the Provence as it does, Nimes and other rural areas in Gard benefit from the blend of colour and light so associated with the Provence landscape. In the fields around Nimes are masses of vines, olive groves and fruit orchards, helping the many exquisite restaurants in Nimes provide fabulous cuisine using locally grown ingredients.
Nimes property prices reflect the popularity of this ancient city. A modern 2-bed apartment in Nimes is likely to cost in the region of 120,000 euros, while a more traditional 5-bed Nimes property in the centre of the old district can be acquired for around 250,000 euros. Outside Nimes, there are several idyllic villages and hamlets in which to look for that dream villa in France. These include the famous Pont du Gard - always an excellent place to search for French property - and the village of Souvignargues midway between Nimes and Montpellier.
