Midway between Toulouse and Cahors on the A20 autoroute is the historic town of Montauban. Capital city of the Tarn-et-Garonne department, Montauban resides on the eastern bank of the River Tarn, just prior to it merging with the Garonne River near Moissac. The town prides itself as a centre for art and history in the region, being home to some exquisite architecture that dates back several centuries as well as housing some fine museums. For French property hunters, Montauban is an excellent base from which to search for a villa in France in the ancient land of Quercy.
The heart of the old town can be found around the river. It was founded in 1144 and is in fact one of the oldest bastide towns in Southern France. The 14th century stone bridge that crosses from the old town to the Villebourbon district on the west side of the river is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the town. Montauban is also known as the birthplace of the painter Jean Dominique Ingres. His works are housed in many museums throughout the world, and have been compared to the style of paintings produced by Picasso.
Montauban property in the town itself is a mix of architectural styles. There are many 17th and 18th century buildings constructed of the characteristic pink stone that is also found in Toulouse. The more modern suburbs offer a selection of fine Montauban property including apartments, villas and a smattering of prestige residences. In the surrounding countryside there are many opportunities for French property hunters to find run-down farmhouses and hamlet properties for renovation.
