Meribel is an attractive purpose-built ski resort that is located in the heart of the Massif Vanoise. It is widely regarded as one of the best locations in which to enjoy winter sports, situated as it is in the middle of the Three Valleys, flanked to the north by Courchevel and to the south by Val Thoren. Meribel has access to over 600kms of ski slopes and some 200 ski lifts in what is the largest inter-linked ski area in the world - a perfect locality in which to buy French property if you're mad about skiing!
Scotsman Colonel Peter Lindsay founded Meribel in 1938. The village is well designed, Meribel property consisting wholly of wooden chalets and villas in a traditional Alpine style. The village today sprawls along the valley floor, rising up the gentle valley sides as new Meribel property developments come on line.
Meribel is very popular with British tourists, many of whom own French property in the village. It has been said that in the bars and restaurants around the resort, English is more frequently heard than French, such is its appeal to the ski-mad Brits. Property prices in Meribel though are not cheap. A 6-room chalet-style villa in France in the village itself will cost around 900,000 euros.
