Mayenne is the most northern department in the Western Loire. It takes its name from the Mayenne River that flows through the town of Mayenne and down to the towns of Laval and Chateau Gontier. The landscape of Mayenne is quite varied. There are the mountains of Southern Normandy that overflow into the area from the north, as well as a network of open fields and forests in the lowlands to the south. In the east of the region is the great natural park of Normandie-Maine - an idyllic location in which to search for rural French property.
Laval is the largest town in Mayenne. Built around the river that passes through its centre, Laval has a history going back to the 3rd century. The old part of town is focused around the 11th century castle. Narrow streets lined with traditional medieval Mayenne property are a huge tourist attraction in the area - the street of Le Grand Rue with its view up to the cathedral being the most dramatic.
Mayenne is the least expensive area for French property in the Western Loire. Buyers will find a good selection of rural Mayenne property throughout the area. A 3-bed villa in France close to Le Horps in the north-east of the region was recently on the market for less than 70,000 euros.
