The Limousin region is located in Central France between the Centre Region and Aquitaine to the south-west of France. Traditionally viewed as a backwater of France, the Limousin is fast gaining a reputation as one of the top places for North Europeans to move to in France, especially as there is an abundance of inexpensive French property as well as ample excellent renovation projects to consider.
The Limousin is divided into three administrative departments - Correze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne. The department of Haute-Vienne is dominated by dramatic landscapes, situated as it is on the edge of the Massif Central. Deep valleys through which streams and rivers cut their path, countless lakes and beautiful countryside make the Haute-Vienne a dream location in which to buy Limousin property. Limoges - home to Limoges porcelain and the Haviland Fine Porcelain manufacturer - is the most noteworthy city in the Haute Vienne. It is divided by the river Vienne and is a major tourist centre in the region.
The departments of Creuse and Correze both have the Massif Central within their administrative boundaries. The land rises up here to more than 3,000 ft above sea level, offering spectacular views of the plains and rolling hills to the west and north. Just as in Haute-Vienne, lakes, valleys and rivers crisscross the landscape, dividing it up into a beautiful network of patchwork fields and farmsteads.
For French property buyers who like the outdoor life, Limousin has much to offer. There are literally hundreds of different routes open to walkers in the area, and parts of the Massif Central are perfect for rock climbing. Cyclists are well-catered for too, while watersports enthusiasts will find themselves right at home on the many rivers and lakes in the Limousin.
Limousin's climate is something that any prospective buyer of Limousin property will need to think about before going ahead with their purchase. The weather in the Limousin is a lot more extreme than is experienced along coastal areas of France. Being inland you can expect the summers to be hot and dry, while the winters are normally cold and dry. Autumn and spring sees the most rainfall in the region, while locations in the extreme south-east of the Limousin are also prone to snowfall in the winter months.
So, what can prospective buyers expect on price? Renovation and conversion projects start as low as 20,000 euros in the Limousin. A terraced cottage in a quiet village location in need of substantial renovation was recently on the market for just 20,500 euros. If you're looking for a newly refurbished 3-bed villa in France then expect to pay around 120,000 euros. You can even buy a small 15th century chateau in the Haute Vienne for less than 100,000 euros!!
