The much-celebrated town of Libourne is found at the confluence of the River Isle and River Dordogne close to Bordeaux in Western France. Famous for its vineyards - this is the heart of 'Merlot' country - and for its position on a wide meander of the Dordogne, Libourne is an idyllic place in which to search for French property in the Gironde.
Libourne is a bastide town. It was fortified in 1270, and its medieval heart can still be found at the confluence point of the two rivers. Beyond the old town limits, Libourne property consists of many fine 18th and 19th century residences that spread out to the south and east. The vineyards at Fronsac, Pomerol and St Emilion can all be found within the immediate countryside that surrounds Libourne. Fronsac is where Charlemagne set up a fortified encampment to defend conquered Aquitaine in 769. The vineyards of Fronsac are found across the chalk hillsides and have been producing wine for over 1,000 years.
While there are many opportunities to acquire character Libourne property in the town itself, many French property hunters are drawn to the magnificent homes that can be found in the Gironde countryside. Chateaux, villas, gites and country manor houses abound in this part of France. A 4-bed villa in France with swimming pool some 10 minutes to the North of Libourne can be purchased for around 350,000 euros.
