The medieval town of Laval resides on the banks of the Mayenne River in the heart of the Mayenne department in Northern France. It is situated midway between Rennes and Le Mans off the main A81 autoroute that runs west from Paris, and offers French property hunters an impressive array of prestige properties to choose from in both town and countryside locations.
Laval was founded in the 11th century around the imposing castle, which offers excellent views over the surrounding countryside. The medieval town centre, which comprises of 'Le Grand Rue', was restored in the 16th century. Its half-timbered Laval property with their gabled ends stand tall over the paved roads along the Le Grand Rue, providing visitors with a glimpse back to a time when this was the heart and soul of Laval.
Today, Laval spreads out far beyond this old part of town, and takes in many grand looking residences. Laval property overlooking the Mayenne and larger residences on the outskirts of town are generally the most sought-after type of French property in Laval, while out in the countryside chateaux, villas and manor houses abound. A 5-bed villa in France with unobstructed views of the countryside to the south of Laval can be acquired for a little under 200,000 euros.
