The pine forests and wetlands of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Park dominate the department of Landes in Southwest France. The park spreads out over some 300,000 hectares across this corner of Aquitaine, overflowing into the departments of Gironde and Lot et Garonne. For tourists and French property hunters, Landes is a natural paradise; the department also offers access to one of the longest unbroken stretches of beach in Europe.
Northern Landes is sparsely populated. Only a few small villages are dotted about in the interior amongst the vastness of the flat pine forests. Along the coast are the larger towns of Biscarrosse and Mimizan - both of which are highly sought after locations in which to buy Landes property near the fabulous Landes beaches. A 1950s 7-bed Landes property 1.5 miles from the beach in Mimizan was recently on the market for 450,000 euros.
Southern Landes see the unbroken forests of the park come to an abrupt halt along the line of the River Adour. To the south, the countryside becomes more open and hilly, yielding a myriad of small villages and hamlets in which there is a grand selection of idyllic French property for sale. A 4-bed villa in France in the countryside between Dax and Capbreton close to the Adour will cost in the region of 350,000 to 400,000 euros.
