Lake Geneva is the largest lake in Western Europe. It is located between the Alps and the Jura mountains, and shares its borders with Switzerland and France. The city of Geneva sprawls around its southwestern end, its international airport providing excellent access to the Haute Savoie region for tourists and French property hunters. The Rhone River exits the lake through Geneva, winding its way down through the countryside towards Lyon and the Rhone Valley.
The southern shore of Lake Geneva is a magical place. Several villages and hamlets line the shore with some exquisite Lake Geneva property overlooking the water. The terrain in this part of the country inclines steadily to the south, taking in forests and many hamlets. The ski resorts of the French Alps are also easily accessed, the closest ski resort at Bernex being only a 20-minute drive from the Lake's shore.
Thonon les Bains and Evian les Bains are the two major settlements on the south shore. Both are idyllic spa towns in which Lake Geneva property is much sought-after. Evian les Bains is the most notable of the two areas, being home to the world famous 'Evian' mineral water as well as thermal baths and plush health resorts.
French property close to Lake Geneva is not cheap. A typical 3-bed villa in France with views over the lake will cost in region of 270,000 euros.
