The historic town of La Rochelle stands on a headland jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean in the Poitou Charentes, Western France. The town has a long association with the sea, having taken on important roles within the French fishing industry and in commercial maritime trade down through the centuries. Today, La Rochelle's harbour and four seaports are seen as one of the most important centres for maritime trade and tourism in the country. This makes it a much sought-after location in which to search for coastal French property - especially if yachting and other watersports are on the agenda.
La Rochelle has an excellent transport infrastructure. Motorways and dual carriageways connect the town with other major centres of tourism in the area, and there are good rail links operating in and out of the town too. There is also a regional airport situated on the north side of La Rochelle, providing easy access to the region for international visitors. Ferry services operate from La Rochelle to the islands of Ile de Aix, Ile d'Oleron and Ile de Re. The town also provides a direct road link to Ile de Re across the immense and very impressive Le Pont de Ile de Re.
The les Minimes area of La Rochelle, on the south side of the river estuary, is a great place to begin your search for La Rochelle property. Here, a 3-bed apartment with unobstructed views of the sea can be acquired for around 240,000 euros. La Rochelle property along the beachfront too is in demand. Inland to the east of La Rochelle French property hunters will find a plethora of small villages in which that dream villa in France can be found.
