The landlocked department of Indre occupies a segment of the ancient land of Berry in Central France. Part of the Centre Region, Indre is a land of wide-open countryside, elegant chateaux, forests, rivers and lakes. There are many picturesque villages and hamlets throughout the region too, providing French property hunters with an impressive selection of locations in which to search for that dream villa in France.
Chateauroux is the capital of Indre. It is a pretty town that is proud of its architectural heritage. Some of the oldest French property in Indre can be found in Chateauroux. Meandering its way around to the north of Chateauroux is the river from which the department takes its name. The Indre in fact runs diagonally right through the middle of the department on its way towards joining the Loire River near Tours to the north-west.
The Creuse is the other important river that crosses through Indre. It cuts a path along the south-west corner of the department. Between The Creuse and Chateauroux is the magnificent Brenne Natural Park. A land of a thousand lakes, the Park occupies much of the western end of Indre, and is a much sought-after area in which to buy Indre property.
Indre property prices are some of the cheapest in France. A 3-bed rural cottage near Ardentes can be purchased for around 120,000 euros, while one lot containing two renovated houses next to a lake in the Brenne Natural Park was recently on the market for just 150,000 euros.
