The town of Grasse is situated in the Alpes Maritime in Southeast France a few miles north of Cannes. Sparsely populated - the town has only 45,000 residents - its main claim to fame is that it produces around 60% of France's natural aromatics that are supplied to the perfume and food industries. Grasse in fact is known as the perfume capital of the world, as it has been involved with perfume production since the 16th century.
Grasse and its surrounding commune are very attractive areas in which to search for French property. The town is seen as a gateway between the fabled Provence countryside and the glitz and glamour of the coastal resorts of Cannes and Antibes, so providing Grasse property buyers with the best of both worlds. Another factor is that the town is located at an altitude of around 300m-400m above sea level, helping it to attain a fresher climate than the coastal resorts, and so offering relief from the intense summer heat along the coast.
To the north of Grasse is a much wilder side of Provence. The mountains gain height quickly behind Grasse reaching up to 1300m above sea level, after which comes the forested valley between St Auban and Roquesteron - an area that is very different from the landscape to the south of Grasse.
Grasse property for sale generally includes villas and townhouses. Prices for Grasse property are lower than in locations along the Cote d'Azur coastline, a 5-room villa in France with swimming pool costing around 550,000 euros. Chateauneuf-Grasse a little to the east of the main town is currently a good area in which to buy plots of land. A 2867m2 plot of land with planning permission for a 200m2 French property construction can be acquired for around 280,000 euros.
