Gard is the easternmost department of the Languedoc Roussillon. It is nestled in the western half of the Lower Rhone Valley between the Cevennes mountain range and the Camargue. A much sought-after department in which to buy French Property, Gard possesses a diverse range of landscapes. There are forests, lakes and mountains in the north, while in the south there are the marshes and wetlands near Aigues Mortes.
Nimes is the capital city of Gard. It is situated midway between Montpellier and Avignon, just off the main A9 motorway. There is some impressive architecture in the city, not least the two-tier Roman amphitheatre that stands as a legacy of the Roman Empire. The amphitheatre dates to the 1st or 2nd century AD, and is used in Nimes today as a bullfighting arena.
French property in Gard is a real mixture of styles. There is a spread of medieval towns throughout the department in which characteristic whitewashed Gard property with red-tiled roofs can be found. In Nimes there are grand apartments, manor houses and other prestige Gard property available for sale, while in the extreme east of the department the Rhone Valley reveals some quite exquisite locations in which to buy a villa in France.
