Gap is the capital town of the Hautes Alpes department in Northern Provence. It occupies a position on the cusp of the French Alps as they descend down to the rolling hills of Provence. The town is the gateway to the Ecrins National Park and is only 7kms away from the nearest cross-country skiing resort. For foreign property hunters looking for French property amongst the beautiful Alpine landscape, Gap offers an excellent alternative to some of the more commercialised areas further to the north in Savoie and Haute Savoie.
The town of Gap itself is nestled on a plateau some 800m above sea level. Consisting predominantly of whitewashed buildings, some of which have red tiled roofs, the settlement is sheltered by the woods and forests that surround it. The alpine peaks of the Massif des Ecrins rise up behind the town to the north, offering an awe inspiring view at any time of the year.
Gap is a green and spacious town. Many of the streets are tree-lined, while some Gap property on the outskirts of the town are almost entirely surrounded by trees. Apartments, townhouses and villas make up the majority of Gap property in the centre of town, while larger, more prestigious French property is found out towards the town's edges. A 3-bed villa in France with commanding views across the Haute Alpes countryside can be acquired for around 400,000 euros.
