The town of Evreux is located in the department of Eure in Upper Normandy (Haute Normandie) some 75kms west of Paris. It resides on the Iton River prior to the river's convergence with the Eure to the north of the town, and offers peace and tranquillity in abundance on the edge of the beautiful Normandy countryside. Given its proximity to Paris and also its closeness to the international airport at Rouen, Evreux is becoming an increasingly popular town in which foreigners decide to base themselves for a weekend of looking for French property for sale in Upper Normandy.
The town itself is said to be one of the oldest in France. It was an important outpost for the Roman Empire before it was almost completely destroyed by the Vandals in the 5th century. It is also home to some impressive monuments that include one of the largest cathedrals in France. Evreux was badly damaged during World War II on two separate occasions. In 1940, invading German aircraft attacked the town, during which time Evreux burnt for a week. The second time was during 1944, when allied aircraft liberated the town from German occupation.
Very little Evreux property dating back to early on in the town's history survives today, with most Evreux property available for sale in the town itself being a result of the 1950s and 1960s rebuilding program following the war. Outside Evreux, prospective buyers will find a wealth of French property set in the beautiful rolling countryside, including farmhouses, villas and chateaux. A 16th century Norman style villa in France with three bedrooms close to Evreux was recently on the market for just 190,000 euros.
