Dunkerque, situated on the Nord Pas de Calais coastline, is France's northeastern-most town. Famed as a haven for pirates in the 17th century, Dunkerque today is an important contributor to the French fishing industry as well as being a major international shipping port handling commercial cargo from all around the globe. Dunkerque also has a passenger ferry terminal. It runs a regular route across the Channel to England, providing British residents interested in buying French property around the Dunkerque area with easy access to the French coastline.
During World War II, Dunkerque (Dunkirk) was heavily bombarded when German forces isolated allied troops in the area. The town was mostly destroyed - only 20% of it remained intact once fighting had ceased. Consequently, the town underwent a huge rebuilding program in the 1950s - much of the Dunkerque property found for sale in the town today is no more than 60 years old as a result.
For tourists, Dunkerque's main attraction is its long sandy beach. There is a real seaside town atmosphere to the place now, with beachfront apartments being the most sought-after type of French property in the area. A 2-bed apartment in Dunkerque can be purchased for between 100,000 euros and 120,000 euros. Dunkerque property with a sea view often carries a premium. To the south of Dunkerque and along the border with Belgium is a network of villages and hamlets - ideal if you're looking for a more secluded villa in France.
