The department of Drome is located in Southeast France on the edge of the French Alps. The area takes in a vast array of landscapes, from forested mountains that rise up to 4,500ft down to the fertile plains and vineyards of the Rhone Valley and the Rhone River itself. Traversed by the main Paris to Marseille motorway and the TGV Mediterranee line, Drome is easily accessible to tourists and those looking to buy French property in the Rhone Valley.
The department takes its name from the River Drome, which flows east to west out from the alpine foothills. It joins the Rhone at the midpoint between the two main towns in the region - Valence and Montelimar. Valence is the capital of Drome. The town occupies a prime position on the Rhone in the north-west of the department and is a centre for tourism, industry and education in the Rhone Valley. Montelimar is a more compact town, standing again on the Rhone. The town is a big tourist draw, the much-revered Montelimar Nougat being the main reason for its popularity. Between the two towns is a mass of vineyards producing some of the finest wines in France. There are also some excellent opportunities to buy Drome property close the Rhone River here too.
Away from the Rhone and into the Drome countryside there is a fine selection of Drome property to be found in a number of villages, hamlets and in quiet country lanes. Chateaux, vineyards, villas, farmhouses and manor houses are just a few of the types of French property that can be found throughout the area. A 3-bed villa in France, built in 2001 with two outbuildings can be acquired for around 430,000 euros in the countryside between Valence and Romans-su-Isere.
