Dijon is the capital of the Burgundy region. It is located in the department of Cote d'Or and is a town with a rich history, being the former home of the Dukes of Burgundy. The Beaune Valley - famous for the Cote de Nuits vineyards - runs into the town from the south of the region, while to the west lay the spectacular mountains and forests of the Cote d'Or countryside - and some of the best areas in which to buy rural French property in Burgundy.
Dijon itself is packed full of architecture that survives from medieval times. There is a bewildering array of half-timbered Dijon property, supporting decorated gabled ends right across the town. Visitors will also find opulent renaissance structures as well as some outstanding 19th and 20th century architecture. The town also heaves with parish churches - there are more than 100 spires, turrets and steeples dotting the Dijon skyline today.
Dijon's international airport, which is situated to the southeast of the town, plays an important role in attracting visitors and prospective Dijon property buyers to the area. Many large European cities are less than 3 hours flight-time away, with many airlines flying direct to Dijon.
French property in the countryside surrounding Dijon is relatively inexpensive when compared to regions such as the Western Loire and Brittany. A 3-bed renovated villa in France not far from Dijon can be acquired for around 150,000 euros.
