The historic town of Dax stands on the River Adour at the meeting point of the vast Landes forest and the more open terrain of Southern Landes. An important settlement since pre-Roman times, Dax today is firmly on the tourist trail thanks to its architectural legacy and its position as the #1 spa town in Southwest France. The international airport at Biarritz is only some 30-40 minutes away from Dax, making the town and its surrounding countryside easily accessible to French property hunters looking for a villa in France in this part of Landes.
Within Dax visitors will find several thermal spas and mud baths. The Roman's appreciated Dax for these qualities some 2,000 years ago, and it is even reputed that the Emperor Augustus brought is daughter to the town for some Roman health care in the hot spring waters and therapeutic muds. Such was the Roman's appreciation of Dax, they founded the Fontaine Chaude hot spring and enclosed it within a Romanesque wall.
There are many fine properties to be found around the Dax area, including character Dax property dating back several centuries, prestige villas and grand chateaux. In Dax itself, apartments, townhouses and individual prestige residences are available to Dax property buyers. On the market recently was a large 19th century bourgeoisie home with large gardens for only 350,000 euros. French property in the countryside to the south of Dax is much sought-after too. Here, a F5 villa with swimming pool and private grounds can be acquired for around 300,000 euros.
