The historic town of Colmar is situated in the heart of the Alsace wine region in Northeast France. It occupies a prime position on a plateau to the western side of the Rhine Valley, only a few miles from the Rhine River itself. The Vosges mountains and their pine forests tower up to the west of Colmar, while in-between the vineyards of the Alsace and a smattering of French property caress the valley slopes. All in all, it is a green and tranquil paradise that makes for a perfect location in which to buy a rural villa in France.
Half-timbered buildings with coloured facades are everywhere in Colmar. They line the rivers that flow through the town and crowd around the delightful streets. Adolph House in the centre of the town, with its fabulous gothic windows is thought to be the oldest Colmar property and is a permanent fixture on the tourist trail. Other impressive sites include Voltaire's House, with its striking array of windows, and the Bartholdi museum.
At night Colmar takes on a different appearance. The town becomes bathed in an array of soft colourful lights that change in both colour and intensity. Paris may be the original 'city of light', but Colmar is a real challenger for its modern-day crown!
Colmar property is not expensive. A 4-bed property in a quiet district of the town will cost around 150,000 euros, while 4 & 5 bed French property on the hillside overlooking Colmar can be acquired for under 200,000 euros.
