The historic city of Clermont Ferrand stands at the head of the Allier Valley in Puy de Dome to the north of the Massif Central. It is the capital of the Auvergne region and hosts the main international airport that provides access to Northern Auvergne for tourists and prospective French property buyers. The airport runs direct routes to many major European cities, so enabling the region to be accessed in under 3 hours from most airports in Western and Central Europe.
The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, the L'Hôtel de Chazerat and the Opera House in Clermont Ferrand offer just a taster of the architectural heritage in this city. It is the landscape around Clermont Ferrand though that makes this city one of Central France's top tourist destinations. Immediately outside the city to the west is the awesome Volcanic National Park. Here, visitors can tour more than 80 volcanoes, the most dramatic being the Puy de Dome caldera, some 15 minutes drive from the city outskirts.
Throughout the Volcanic Park are excellent hiking routes and even golf courses. Within easy reach of Clermont Ferrand are the volcanic lakes and the medieval city of Riom, and there are even ski slopes a little further up into the Massif Central too.
French property in the immediate vicinity of Clermont Ferrand is in high demand. Prices are therefore inflated for Clermont Ferrand property in the city and the countryside within a 5-10 mile radius. A 5-bed Clermont Ferrand Property near Royat a few minutes to the west of Clermont Ferrand was recently on the market for 535,000 euros. Further away from the city and out in the countryside property prices become a lot more reasonable. A 5-bed villa in France in Vic le Comte to the south-east of Clermont Ferrand will cost 100,000 euros less than in the city itself.
