The department of Cher is located in the heart of France, where the Centre Region meets the Auvergne and Bourgogne. It takes its name from the River Cher that traverses across the western part of the department from St Amand to Vierzon. Much of the Cher is rural, comprising of unspoilt countryside, forests and rivers - ideal if you are looking for French property far away from the madding crowds.
There is but one city in Cher - the city of Bourges. Bourges is a city with a long history. It was once described by Julius Caesar as the most beautiful city in Gaulle, and has since gained a wealth of historical buildings. The elegant gothic cathedral with its flying buttresses is an awesome sight - and the city 'plays up' its medieval charm, conducting the 'Nuits Lumiere' every summer evening, in which the delights of ancient Bourges comes to life.
The Cher region is also known for its waterways. There are navigable canals to be found in this part of France, as well as a myriad of smaller watercourses, along which French property buyers can find some exquisite Cher property, such as chateaux and watermills in need of restoration.
Cher property offers good value to the foreign property buyer. A late 19th century 5-bed home near the town of Levet was recently on the market for 190,000 euros. In Preuilly a 3-bed villa in France in a village setting can be acquired for less than 150,000 euros.
