Castres is located on the southern cusp of the Massif Central in the department of Tarn. It stands on both banks of the Agout River, which winds its way down from the mountains in the east. The international airports at Albi and Toulouse provide excellent access to Castres, with the drive between the airports and the town taking less than an hour. Castres is a town that has retained its medieval charm. Famed as one of the pilgrimage stops on the way of Santiago de Compostela, the town is packed full of beautiful buildings with red roof tiles and white-cream exteriors. Many of the buildings in the old town were once occupied by tanners, weavers and dyers for Castres has a long established connection with the wool trade going back as far as the 14th century. Even today, Castres remains at the forefront of the wool trade in France.
