Carcassonne is situated on the River Aude in the department of Aude in Southern France. It is a town that is firmly on the tourist trail, many coming to see the walled medieval city and the French property that now stands restored within its boundaries. The airport to the west of the city receives regular direct flights in from budget airlines like Ryanair, so providing easy access to Carcassonne for visitors and people looking to buy Carcassonne property.
The walled medieval city has a long history. The site on which it was built was seen to have a strategic advantage as far back as 300BC. It was not until the 12th century that the construction we see today began. Through much of the Middle Ages the medieval city was a thriving community, but by the early 1800s the city was abandoned as it fell into ruin. During the late 19th century the city underwent a huge program of restoration and in 1997 the medieval city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Today, Carcassonne expands a long way out and around the original walled city. The 'newer' area takes in more of the River Aude and also has the Canal du Midi grace its northern districts. Carcassonne property on the edge of the canal is much sought-after by foreign property buyers, as is French property with views of the medieval city. Prices for a 5-bed villa in France 5 minutes away from the medieval city start at around 250,000 euros.
