Calvados is the central department in Basse Normandy. It is sandwiched between Manche to its west and Orne to its east and south. This area has an enduring popularity with French property buyers from Britain. In fact, in some areas of Calvados, whole communities of British ex-pats can be found. Parisians too have an affinity with the Norman countryside here, often selecting Calvados property as a second home.
The Calvados countryside is some of the most idyllic in Normandy. In the south of the region, hills, forests and valleys dominate the view, while closer to the coast wooded hills roll more gently across the landscape. Along the coastline itself are the D-Day landing beaches of Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, along with fitting reminders that pay tribute to all those who gave their lives to liberate France in 1944.
Caen and Bayeux are the two main towns in the north of the region - both of which offer residents and visitors a window into the past. Further along the coast to the east are the seaside towns of Cabourg, Villers sur Mer and Deauville - all popular locations with Calvados property buyers seeking French property on the North Coast. Grandcamp Maisy in the extreme north-west of Calvados is another much sought-after village in which to buy a villa in France overlooking the Channel.
