Caen is situated in Northern Normandy in the department of Calvados. Completely rebuilt after World War II, Caen is a city located in an area of huge historical significance. It is only a few miles away from the Normandy Landing beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold, and is less than 15-miles from the town of Bayeux - home of the Bayeux Tapestry that depicts the Battle of Hastings in England during 1066. For prospective French property buyers, Caen and the surrounding area represents a great opportunity to find authentic Norman property as well as to find plots of land on which to build that dream villa in France.
Despite Caen's almost complete destruction in World War II, buildings dating back to the 11th century still stand in parts of the city. There are also a good number of traditional half-timbered houses to be seen, along with a whole host of churches and museums. Of particular note in the city is the Museum for Peace which was built in 1988.
Some of the nicest residential areas in which to buy Caen property in the city itself can be found along the banks of the River Orne as it winds itself down to the sea. A two-bed apartment overlooking the river in the centre of the city can be acquired for around 180,000 euros. Other elegant Caen property can be found in Place Saint-Sauveur and Caen Place du Canada within the city. Caen is also a good location in which to buy commercial French property such as shops, restaurants and bars, as it is the largest city in the Calvados area, and so receives a good number of visitors every year.
