Situated midway between Tours and Orleans in the Loire Valley is the historical town of Blois. Dominated by French property constructed of white stone and blue-grey slate roofs, the town was once a much-favoured retreat for French royalty in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. It is now firmly on the tourist route, with Blois property backing onto the river being the most sought-after type of property purchase in the area.
Blois is surrounded by dense forests. To the west of the town is the Foret de Blois and its network of minor roads, which lead to picturesque villages on the other side of the trees. Around the south and out to the east of Blois are the forests of Russy and Boulogne, together with the Parc de Chambord. Hidden within the forests and woodlands, as well as along the valley are many fine chateaux, a fair number of which are open to the public.
French property around the Blois area is inexpensive. A 3-bed 19th century character Blois property just to the south of the town was recently on the market for 127,000 euros. A 5-bed villa in France near Montlivault overlooking the Loire can be acquired for around 240,000 euros.
