The ancient town of Beziers is located in Southern Herault close to the Mediterranean Sea. It was the birthplace of Pierre Paul Riquet - the man behind the Canal du Midi - and is where the French Resistance fighter, Jean Moulin was born. Today, the international airport situated to the east of the town provides convenient access for tourists visiting the Southern Herault area, and for people coming to the area to look for French property.
The Gothic Saint Nazaire cathedral is the most imposing historic monument in the town. This cathedral was built on the site of the original cathedral that was burnt down in 1209 by the crusading French army in their fight against the Cathars. In Beziers there are many 13th and 14th century monuments to be found too. These include the Chapelle de la Vierge and the Bishop's Palace. The bridge that crosses the River Orb also dates back to medieval times.
Modern-day Beziers provides visitors and local residents with excellent shops, restaurants and entertainment. The town has grown around its medieval heart, providing a mix of architectural styles, although Beziers property flaunting red-tiled roofs are still very much in abundance. For Beziers property buyers looking for a challenge, the town has a surplus of run down townhouses in need of renovation - some of which date back to medieval times. The villages in the surrounding countryside also offer a good choice of French property in need of restoration, as well as plots of land on which to build that dream villa in France.
