The town of Beaune is situated in the heart of Burgundy. It sits within a valley that runs northeastwards towards Dijon, and is flanked on either side by the hills and mountains of the Cote d'Or. Known around the world for its vineyards, Beaune and the surrounding countryside are picturesque areas in which to buy French property as a second home or permanent residence in France.
Beaune itself is a wonderful medley of quaint buildings, cobbled streets and ornate spires. It nurtures a superb medieval atmosphere, with much of the architecture in the town dating back several centuries. The Hospices de Beaune is without doubt the most eye-catching building arrangement in the town. Built in 1443 as a medieval hospital, its patterned and coloured roof tiles are striking to say the least. Today, the Hospices de Beaune houses a museum.
As you would expect in a town so associated with winemaking, there are numerous wine cellars dotted around Beaune. Ever-popular with tourists, the cellars are open to the public, allowing you to search the dimly lit vastness of an underground world of wine. Most of the cellars conduct regular wine tasting events, and there are many tours designed to take visitors around to the crème-de-la-crème of Beaune's nearby vineyards too.
Beaune property available for sale is generally limited to medieval and renaissance style townhouses, as well as character Beaune property that has been converted into apartments. Prices are quite reasonable in the town itself, a 4-bed French property close to the town centre costing in the region of 160,000 euros. In the surrounding countryside and along the Beaune Valley there are some truly outstanding prestige residences to be found, including manor houses and character homes. A luxury 4-bed villa in France between Beaune and nearby Chalon-sur-Saone with large landscaped gardens can be acquired for around 700,000 euros.
