The famous town of Bayeux is situated close to the Basse Normandy coastline in the department of Calvados. A favourite with French property hunters, the town is home to the Bayeux Tapestry - a 70m long 11th century tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in England during 1066 - and it is also the closest major town to the Normandy Landing beaches of Omaha and Gold. Bayeux also offers easy access to the other Normandy Landing beaches via the main N13 road between Caen and Cherbourg.
The D-Day Landings play an important role in Bayeux's history as it was the first major town in France to be liberated from German occupation in World War II. In the town itself is the Normandy Battle Memorial Museum, while a few minutes away along the coast are important sites at Port-en-Bessin and Arromanches les Bains. Together with the Bayeux Tapestry Museum and the town's wealth of other historical attractions, Bayeux is now popular with tourists all year round.
If you're looking for Bayeux property you'll find some exquisite French property in the countryside surrounding the town. Here, amongst the rolling Normandy hills, there is a wealth of prestige homes from 150,000 euros upwards. Recently, a 5-bed villa in France 5kms south of Bayeux was on the market for 280,000 euros. Bayeux property in the town itself includes townhomes and luxury apartments.
