Auxerre is the capital of the Yonne department in Western Burgundy. It stands on the river Yonne close to the A6 motorway that runs southeastwards from Paris, and also occupies a position alongside the Agrippa Roman Way. Only a 90-minute drive away from Paris, Auxerre is becoming an increasingly popular town from which foreigners decide to launch a weekend of looking for French property for sale in Western Burgundy.
Wine is the major produce of Auxerre. There are world-class vineyards in the countryside all around the town, including the famous vineyards of Chablis a short distance to the east. To the north of Auxerre is Joigny, Burgundy's most northerly vineyard, while the village of Saint Fargeau to the south-west of Auxerre is home to a six-turreted pink brick castle!
Auxerre property in the town itself is a mix of architectural styles. There are half-timbered buildings dating back several centuries as well as 18th and 19th century Auxerre property with wrought iron balconies. In the town centre, many o the older buildings have been converted to apartments. Out in the countryside, a huge array of French property awaits discovery.
