The department of Aude occupies a southerly position in the Languedoc Roussillon region. It borders the Mediterranean Sea between the departments of Pyrenees Orientales and Herault, and takes in a range of terrain, from mountains and forests to marshland and long sandy beaches. Several airports are clustered within this region, making Aude an easy place to reach for tourists and French property buyers.
Along the Mediterranean coastline, Aude is dominated by a series of large coastal lagoons. The coastline runs up around the Gulf of Lions in a small arc, revealing miles and miles of long sandy beachfront. Aude property along the coast in towns like Port la Nouvelle, where beachfront homes can be purchased, is much in demand.
The famous Canal du Midi runs along the northern areas of Aude, with branches of the canal spreading out around Narbonne. Following the Canal du Midi to the west we find the grand city of Carcassonne, and its medieval citadel. In the south of the region are the Corbieres mountains, which rise up to around 4,000ft above sea level.
French property in Aude is as varied as its landscape. Secluded Aude property can be found in the quiet mountain villages to the south, while the network of rivers and forests provide buyers with the opportunity to find that beautiful red-tiled villa in France amongst some truly stunning scenery. A 4-bed village house near Carcassonne will cost in the region of 200,000 euros to 250,000 euros.
