The Ardeche is the south-westernmost department in the Rhone Alpes region in Southeast France. It takes in a multitude of landscapes from the highest peaks of the Cevennes mountain range in the Massif Central to the floodplain of the Rhone River as this famous waterway tracks south towards the Mediterranean. Originator of the Loire River and the Ardeche River, the department of Ardeche offers a wealth of rural French property for sale amongst some of France's most dramatic terrain.
The eastern boundary of the Ardeche region follows the path of the Rhone River from near the town of Annonay down past the towns of Valence and Montelimar to Pont St Esprit. The boundary between the departments of Ardeche and Drome is primarily along the eastern bank. The central section of the Rhone River therefore mostly resides within the department of Ardeche.
Dotted around the Ardeche region are some spectacular villages offering old-world character in abundance. Much of the Ardeche property found here is constructed of the blue-tinged stone that is found naturally throughout the area. Many of the villages date back to medieval times and are nestled on rocky outcrops or seemingly carved out of the hillside above deep gorges. Alba-la-Romaine, Beauchastel, Antraigues and Labeaume are just some of the villages in the Ardeche in which historic Ardeche property can be found.
French property for sale in Ardeche is some of the least expensive in France. A 4-bed villa in France plus a gite and 2800m2 of land was recently on the market for just 220,000 euros near Aubenas.
