Ajaccio is the prefecture of the Corse du Sud region in Corsica. It is situated around a natural bay in the south-west quarter of the island and is the region's main tourist and commercial centre. Ajaccio's international airport welcomes flights in from mainland France - specifically from Marseille, Paris, Nice and Lyon - providing convenient access to the south of the island for tourists and French property hunters.
The main part of Ajaccio hugs the coastline around the bay. In the central bay area is the ferry terminal that runs routes out to Marseille, Toulon and Nice, as well as to Gerona and Porto Torres. On either side of the ferry terminal are yachting harbours housing many small pleasure craft. Along the front of the bay behind the ferry terminal is the old part of Ajaccio. Here, Ajaccio property with characteristic red-tiled roofs crowd around narrow streets. Further up the hillside apartments and hotel complexes of a more modern construction begin to dominate.
For French property buyers, Ajaccio property in the small satellite hamlets that surround the main town offer much potential. There are several of these small developments trailing up the hillside, providing more open space than around Central Ajaccio itself together with a better view of the bay and countryside. A 3-bed villa in France on the outskirts of Ajaccio will cost in the region of 250,000 euros.
