Aix les Bains is situated on the eastern shore of the largest natural lake in France - Lac du Bourget. It is close to Chambery in the department of Savoie, and occupies a relatively flat low-lying area of land. The town offers exceptional views over the lake towards Mont de la Charvaz and Mont du Chat, and is also flanked on its northern side by Mont de Corsuet, a dramatic hill that throws out exposed rock strata along its ridge. The town's proximity to the international airport at Chambery makes Aix les Bains an ideal place in which foreign investors can start their search for French property in the Western Savoie.
Aix les Bains thrives on tourism. It is the second most visited spa town in France, and offers a wealth of recreational and adventure activities to suit people of all ages. Naturally, water sports are a big factor in the popularity of Aix les Bains, the lake providing a platform for such sports as windsurfing, sailing, fishing, rowing and water skiing. There are even sandy beaches lining parts of the water's edge - perfect if you want to relax in the summer sun.
During the winter Aix les Bains is ideally placed to enjoy winter sports in the French Alps. Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thoren are under an hour's drive away from Aix les Bains, while Megeve, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isere are only a little further over to the east.
Aix les Bains property is a mix of townhouses, apartments, villas and detached French property of differing architectural styles. Aix les Bains property overlooking the lake, or those that are slightly elevated with views across the lake, are generally the most sought-after. A 3-bed 1950s villa in France with lake view can be acquired in the town for around 350,000 euros.
